Drug resistance evolution in HIV, E. coli and P. falciparum. Find the differences

Abstract:

Drug resistance is a well-known problem in many pathogens. I am interested in comparing the evolutionary dynamics of resistance in different pathogens. Here are some of the questions I try to answer: In HIV, resistance to Lamivudine has evolved many thousands of times. Why is this drug still useful in 99% of new patients? In African Plasmodium falciparum, resistance to chloroquine is thought to have originated only once. How did this one resistance allele spread across the entire continent? I will share results on E. coli and HIV and show how publicly available data and population genetic methods can help us understand what is happening and how we can fight resistance.
