We value the contributions of all individuals to excellent science and teaching at the Faculty of Biology. But we would like to draw attention to the current gender gap in academic careers.
In Germany, women make up about 51% of the population. At the Faculty of Biology, women make up about 60% of students at Bachelor/Master and PhD level. However, this representation drops drastically to only 22-23% at professor level. This clear discrepancy highlights systemic barriers and limits the diversity of perspectives and research approaches in this field.
Female role models in leadership positions in science are essential; they inspire and provide tangible examples of success for aspiring female scientists, help break down stereotypes and encourage more women to pursue and persevere in academic careers in biology.
To address this gender gap, we feature “Women in Biology” in a series of profiles, sharing their experiences and career paths under the inspiring motto: “You can be what you can see... and more.”
