This year’s Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine for pioneering contributions to optogenetics has a special connection to our Faculty: Hartmann Harz, now head of the Center for Advanced Light Microscopy (CALM), was the first author of the landmark 1991 Nature publication with Peter Hegemann that laid important foundations for the development of optogenetics.

We are therefore particularly pleased that Hartmann Harz will give the opening lecture of this year’s Current Topics lecture series next Monday October 12, 2026.

Everyone is cordially invited to join us and learn more about the history, scientific foundations, and impact of optogenetics.

We warmly congratulate Hartmann Harz on this special recognition of his pioneering work and are delighted to have him as a member of our Faculty.
