The cover image, as well as the image on the right show the phototrophic dinophyte Jadwigia aff. applanata, a motile freshwater algae found in Berlin. The image on the right shows an isolated nucleus with its individual, condensed chromosomes stained with astra blue.

The image shows a thecate cell of the phototrophic dinophyte Chimonodinium, a unicellular alga found in freshwater habitats. This motile microalga, here seen in apical view, has a circular apical pore complex, and individual thecal plates can be identified.
