Global Health Day offers a diverse programme with keynotes, workshops and networking opportunities. The aim of the event is to bring together scientists, students and other interested parties, to promote interdisciplinary exchange and to establish new contacts for future collaborations.

Bio:
"Tom Cech is one of the most influential biochemists of our time and a Nobel Laureate whose discoveries fundamentally transformed molecular biology. As the University of Colorado Boulder, Tom made one of the most paradigm-shifting discoveries in modern biology: that RNA is not merely a passive carrier of genetic information, but can itself act as a catalyst — overturning a foundational tenet of biology and giving rise to an entirely new field. Tom Cech's discovery of ribozymes earned him the 1989 Nobel Prize in Chemistry, shared with Sidney Altman, and helped establish RNA as a functional molecule — laying the groundwork for RNA-based medicine, including the mRNA vaccines developed during COVID-19. Tom's lab also discovered TERT, the catalytic core of telomerase, illuminating how cancer cells hijack the enzyme to sustain their immortality. Beyond his own research, Tom served as President of the Howard Hughes Medical Institute — the nation's largest private funder of basic biomedical research — where he championed interdisciplinary science. He returned to Boulder where he served as Director of the BioFrontiers Institute, and most recently authored The Catalyst: RNA and the Quest to Unlock Life's Deepest Secrets."

The iGEM competition (International Genetically Engineered Machine) offers young scientists the opportunity to combine creativity, engineering, and entrepreneurial spirit to develop biological solutions to real and pressing global challenges. Many iGEM projects go on to form the foundation for future start-ups or patents—and iGEM alumni can be found building companies, communities, and new career paths across the biotech ecosystem. The title of his talk is: "Morphogenesis by microtubules and molecular motors"
I am excited to announce the next speaker of our Keynote seminar series on the theme “Synthesis”. Manuel Théry and his group investigate how cytoskeleton architectures form and organize by combining studies in living animal cells with reconstituted systems made from purified proteins. Their aim is to uncover physical rules governing living matter by complementing top-down approaches of complex systems with highly controlled, minimalist bottom-up models. Using this strategy, they have identified laws governing spindle orientation, centrosome positioning, cell motility, force generation, and intercellular junctions.
Manuel Théry conducted his PhD in the laboratory of Michel Bornens at the Institute Curie and worked as a postdoctoral researcher at the Biochip Lab at CEA Grenoble. In 2010, together with Laurent Blanchoin, he established the ‘CytoMorphoLab’ at the Life Science Department of the Atomic Energy Research Center in Grenoble, and a second unit of the lab at the Institute Pierre Gilles De Gennes in Paris. He is the recipient of multiple ERC grants and is an elected member of EMBO. Besides his exciting scientific work, he uses light installations on public buildings to make the beauty of cytoskeletal dynamics visible to everyone.

The School of Biomedical Sciences was officially established in 2010 under the Faculty of Medicine, and now has three Thematic Research Programmes, namely:

- Developmental and Regenerative Biology
- Neural, Vascular, and Metabolic Biology
Our MPhil-PhD Programme in Biomedical Sciences is dedicated to cultivating research postgraduate students for prominent leadership roles across academia, industry, and beyond. Applications for the 2027-28 academic year will be open from 1st September to 1st December 2026. This program will provide an excellent study opportunity for your master’s students who are considering advanced research training.

Das CUMIN Qualifizierungsprogramm
CUMIN ist ein innovatives, dreijähriges Qualifizierungsprogramm der Universität Bielefeld und der HSBI. Es schlägt die Brücke zwischen MINT-Fächern und medizinischer Forschung, um wissenschaftlichen Nachwuchs gezielt für eine Karriere im Zukunftsfeld eHealth zu qualifizieren.
Die wichtigsten Informationen im Überblick:

Kurs: Einführung in die statistische Datenanalyse mit R
Im Februar 2026 bietet das Statistische Beratungslabor der LMU (StaBLab) zwei Kurse zur Einführung in die statistische Datenanalyse an. Dabei handelt es sich um Blockkurse in den Semesterferien. Ziel der Kurse ist es, den Teilnehmerinnen und Teilnehmern grundlegende statistische Kenntnisse zu vermitteln und sie dazu zu befähigen, diese eigenständig in ihren Projekten anzuwenden. Die Veranstaltungen zeichnen sich durch einen starken Praxisbezug aus und basieren auf den vielfältigen Erfahrungen aus der statistischen Beratung am StaBLab.
Zielgruppe:
Studierende und Promovierende an der LMU, die sich in ihrer Abschlussarbeit bzw. ihrer Forschung mit quantitativen Analysen beschäftigen werden und
• geringe bzw. keine statistischen Kenntnisse haben, oder
• Interesse haben, die frei erhältliche Statistiksoftware R zu erlernen.
Insbesondere ist es empfehlenswert, den Grundkurs vorbereitend zu einer Beratung beim StaBLab zu besuchen.

The Faculty of Science of the University of Montpellier is organising a BIP on the topic of Evolutionary Ecology and Biology.
This program offers participants the opportunity to attend lectures entirely taught in English, given by professors and researchers and visit various laboratories within the University of Montpellier. The courses are complemented by social and cultural events, as well as field trips.
The University of Montpellier is at the forefront of research documenting the impact of global climate change on ecosystem functioning, unveiling rapid and unpredictable environmental changes.
This selective, interdisciplinary BIP is open to third year Bachelor, Master and PhD students, with an undergraduate/Master degree in ecology/evolution, geography, and related disciplines.

Bacteria Summer School | 2025 in Cologne
We have now entered the final stretch of organizing the Bacteria Summer School 2025 from September 24 to 28 in Cologne and have designed a varied and exciting multi-day program that will transport up to 100 students into the world of modern microbiology and bacteria:

For the five-day Summer School, there are currently still 20 spots available for adult students of biology and all other life sciences as well as medicine from the 1st semester onwards - the other 80 of the total 100 spots are already sold out and we look forward to a diverse group of participants from all over Germany! Currently, students from bachelor's and master's programs as well as those taking their 1st or 2nd state examination and PhD candidates are registered. The age range currently spans from 19 to 38, so participants can benefit from the experience of older students and engage in interdisciplinary exchange.
Members of VBIO, VAAM as well as GfG, GfE and DGMet can purchase a Summer School spot for €200 under the Early Bird Ticketing, while external participants pay €220! The participation fee includes four overnight stays at DJH Köln-Riehl, full board, logistics, seminar program as well as the supporting program.
Travel to and from Cologne must be organized and financed individually - through the cooperation with Deutsche Bahn (DB), VBIO can offer all participants a discounted DB event ticket from €16.99 (taking into account any individual discounts):

Internship Opportunity: Molecular Cell Biology / Glia-to-Neuron Reprogramming
We are looking for motivated students to join our project developing candidate cell therapies against obesity. The focus of the internship is on direct reprogramming of brain glial cells into neurons via transcription factor (TF) overexpression strategies.
Your tasks
- Molecular cloning of transcription factor coding sequences into expression vectors
- Verification of TF expression
- Participation in glia-to-neuron reprogramming assays
- Training in PCR, plasmid preparation and quality control, RT-qPCR, and cell culture (depending on internship duration)
What we offer
- Hands-on training in key methods of molecular cell biology

- Opportunity to further develop the project into a Master’s thesis

Dabei bekommt ihr wertvolle Tipps und Anregungen, sowie Austausch und Unterstützung in der Gruppe.
