Plants in the green house

The aim of our research is to understand the impact of plant specialised metabolites on the root microbiome, and the consequences of metabolite mediated microbiome manipulation for plant hosts. Our research is concerned with the chemical plant-microbe interface, and we approach these questions using combinations of molecular, microbiological and computational approaches. We combine experimental studies and genomics to understand how the microbiome responds to plant metabolites, and how the genetic configuration of the host influences interacts with the microbiome composition to give rise to observable phenotypes.

From genetics to genomics: What influence do genes have on the plant microbiome? – With Dr. Niklas Schandry

Many people still remember genetics from biology class: Mendel's laws, dominant and recessive traits, DNA. But what can genetics tell us about the life of plants?

In this episode, we welcome Dr. Niklas Schandry, a scientist at the Department of Genetics in the Faculty of Biology at LMU Munich. He takes us on a journey into the fascinating world of the plant microbiome—the community of microorganisms that not only surrounds plants but also actively influences them.

We talk about the difference between genetics and genomics, who or what plants interact with, and how they communicate with their environment.

He also gives us insights into his work in the laboratory and on the computer, explains which plants are being researched, and what fascinates him personally about this research focus.
