  • Angiosperm phylogenetics, systematics and biogeography, in particular Amaranthaceae, Melastomataceae, Crassulaceae, Aizoaceae, Polycarpaeae (Caryophyllaceae) and Astragalus (Fabaceae)
  • Evolution of C4 photosynthesis and Crassulacean Acid Metabolism (CAM)
  • Evolution and genetic basis of heteranthery
  • Museomics, population genomic and experimental approaches to investigate the adaptation and extinction of plants in changing environments, with focus on endangered species in Bavaria

Quaternary Evolution of the Bavarian Flora and Beyond: Genetic and Ecological Adaptation to Changing Environments

Our aim is to characterize the evolutionary patterns and processes shaping the diversity of the Bavarian Flora in the Quaternary (Pleistocene, Holocene, and Anthropocene). We are using botanical collections, field, greenhouse, and common garden experiments, and cutting-edge genomic and computational tools to understand evolutionary trends shaping the diversity among Bavarian plants. Each species selected for study will provide an evolutionary vignette with which we can gain a clearer understanding of quaternary evolution in Bavaria (and beyond). This project gives special attention to endangered and threatened species of Bavaria and the environmental factors influencing their decline. (More)

Melastomataceae

Melastomataceae is one of the 10 largest flowering plant families. Our research focuses on the systematics, phylogenetics, biogeography, and macroevolution of the family, in particular the Old World lineages. In addition, we also study the genetic basis and evolution of key innovative traits, such as heteranthery. (More)
